Pursing his lips in thought, Jude nodded. “Why, indeed” he whispered; scratching the stubble around a humorless smile of indecision. Finally, Jude sighed loudly and attempted to explain. “You suffered in the fire of the rising sun. Your skin—your body—smoldered from the exposure to sunlight.” The boy cringed; trying to shake off the imprint of agony etched his mind.“This reaction is common in certain types of people.” Scrunching his nose in partial disbelief, Cale asked “Really?”
“Yes. It’s true. And, as you nearly found out first hand, too much sunlight could destroy you; completely.”
“So, there are others like me?” Cale asked.
“Yes.” Jude showed Cale the back of his hands. The skin was covered in a web of pink lines where open wounds labored in healing.
